Frequently Asked Questions
PRE VISIT
How soon after amputation can I get a prosthetic?
The timeline varies depending on your healing process, but many patients can begin the prosthetic journey within 4-8 weeks after surgery. At Amputee Clinic, we’ll work closely with your surgeon to determine the optimal time to start. We offer immediate post-operative consultations to educate you on what to expect, provide compression therapy guidance, and begin planning for your prosthetic fitting. Our goal is to get you walking again as quickly and safely as possible—and with our on-site lab, we can expedite the process once you’re medically cleared.
I'm scheduled for amputation. What should I expect from the prosthetic process?
We understand that facing amputation can be overwhelming, and we’re here to guide you through every step. The prosthetic process typically includes: initial consultation and evaluation, taking measurements and creating a custom socket, fitting your prosthetic device, training with our physical therapy team, and ongoing adjustments to ensure perfect comfort. At Amputee Clinic, we provide a full-circle approach—not just the prosthetic itself, but also physical therapy, nutritional counseling, and diabetic education to support your complete recovery. You’re not alone in this journey, and our team of experts with 80+ years combined experience will be with you every step of the way.
Will I be able to walk again with a prosthetic?
In most cases, yes! The vast majority of our patients achieve functional mobility with a properly fitted prosthetic. Your success depends on several factors including your overall health, the level of amputation, your commitment to physical therapy, and most importantly—having a prosthetic that fits correctly. At Amputee Clinic, we specialize in custom prosthetics designed specifically for your body and lifestyle goals. Our on-site physical therapy team will work with you to build strength, balance, and confidence. We’ve helped countless patients transition from wheelchair dependency to walking independently—and we can help you too.
